Chase Field Jan. 14, 2012 As the Monster Energy Supercross tour headed into Chase Field stadium, in Phoe- nix, Arizona the prognostica- tors were picking the reigning champ, Ryan Villopoto to be the odds on favorite to repeat his title defense the week before at Anaheim 1. That was not to be, as KTM’s Ryan Dungey had an ‘on’ night, giving the Orange machine its first AMA Supercross main event win. Dungey led the field from start to finish to capture his first win of the season and make the Austrian marque’s presence felt on the SX race circuit. Having an off night at Phoe- nix, was the previous weekends winner, Ryan Villopoto, who took a header into the sand pit, remounted and charged back up into third at the finish line, just behind a surprising Jake Weimer, aboard another Ka- wasaki, taking a surprisingly strong second place and podi- um finish in the main event. Rounding out the field at Phoenix was crowd favor- ite, Kevin Windham, in fourth aboard his factory Honda. Chad Reed, who was off the frenzied field’s pace after his previous strong second at Anaheim 1 still managed a fifth overall, to keep his points battle hopes alive. Andrew Short and Trey Ca- nard battled over sixth and sev- enth spot, with James Stewart hitting the ground and getting left behind with an eight for his troubles in Arizo na.
