Enough Said: How Does It All Work? The mid engine design of the Maverick chassis gives the 1000R a true cross between a sport-tuned frame, combined with a stable feeling, confi- dence-inspiring ride at plonk- ing speeds. It is smooth and steady at high speeds, but still has a predictable feel and demeanor out on the tightest trails. The steel frame was engineered to offer better traction, im- proved agility and confidence- inspiring handling, while at the same time, offering improved rigidity versus its competition, the Arctic Cat Wildcat 1000 and Polaris 800 XP sport UTVs. Power The engine specialist at Can-Am have managed to massage the Rotax motor and get even more ponies out of it. It flat out roosts. Making it a solid dune and high speed desert performer. Power is very linear, with a ton on the bottom, mid and top end. There is also plenty of torque to spared, and it is matched up well with the CVT transmission, though we did have a bit of a problem with the belt drive on our particular test unit (see Problems be- low). Also, the electronic fuel injection system makes op- erating the Maverick, at al- most any altitude or elevation, simple, quick, and easy. It automatically compensates the jetting for you. Throttle Control System Another nice feature is the new throttle control system- or IntellIgent throttle control DIRT ILLustrated \\\\\\ Vol. 1 + Issue 4 + Page 54 or ITC. It gives the operator a rider selectable twin-mode toggle switch for throttle con- trol. Which means that it can detect unwanted bounces and then filter the input, result- ing in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. Driv- ers can choose between a pro- gressive mode (standard) and a Sport mode, which offers linear throttle control. A nice feature, that is much appre- ciated, especially when driv- ing through endless whoops, where your throttle foot can be dislodged. Straight Line Drag Racing In a straight line drag race, the new Mavericks are impres- sive. The acceleration is quick, sharp and pronounced. It flat moves out when you punch the throttle. It is snappy, with a solid low to mid-range pul, l and a good bit of run out on the top end. You won’t be los- ing too many drag races to Polaris XP 900’s or Arctic Cat 1000R’s.
