Legends and heros: John Dowd at Southwick finale...

The Legends and Heroes Tour honored John Dowd at the Southwick MX National this weekend. It would be the last time John or any of the other racers would be able to race at this legendary track.

John Dowd, otherwise known as the "Junk Yard Dog," entered his first motocross race at age 20. Fortunately, Dowd took to the demanding sport incredibly fast, turning pro by age 21. The strong-willed racer jumped right into the competition and was taking wins from those who had been raised in the sport.

Dowd has been a podium contender in AMA Motocross and Supercross competition for nearly 20 years; his greatest strengths being stamina and endurance, enabling him to ride solid throughout the entire moto. As a result of starting his racing career later in life, Dowd achieved the best results of his career at a much older age than typical competitors.
Meaner than a Junkyard dog...
Dowd holds many AMA records including oldest rider to win an AMA National (Southwick 125cc, 1998), oldest rider to win a Supercross championship (125cc West, 1998) and oldest rider to win a National Moto (Mt. Morris, 2000).

More recently, Dowd finished third place at the 2005 Southwick 250cc National, just shy of his 40th birthday, aboard a privateer Suzuki RM-Z450.
Years later in 2009, on a rainy and muddy Saturday afternoon, at the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Southwick National, The Junk Yard Dog rode his Kawasaki KX450F on his home track, and notched a runner-up finish in the second 450 moto, ending the day third overall.

"John has been an inspiration to many of us in the moto community," stated Alex Moroz and Mike Owens, managing partners of the Legends and Heroes Tour. "His moto career started later than most but he has shown that age is not a factor in being the best. John Dowd is a true champion on and off the track.
